Culture and politics in Carlos Fuentes

Abstract

This paper talks about the matter of the relationship between culture and politics according to the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes’ conception ; in it, we can always find commentaries related to the huge distance between the cultural continuity and the politics continuity in America.

According to the author, culture in America is efficient, and this occurs because it is done with great dedication, even love. On the other side, politics is done without worrying about the collective values, but with the individual ones; its failure is due to this.

To Carlos Fuentes, the literary text has some essential functions, such as giving name and giving voice. He considers that this is what the writer should do, especially to try to make politics be done so well as the culture, since the continuity of politics presents much deficiency, and the continuity of culture is done with really seriousness.
