Abstract

This article aims to develop a comparative study of the indigenous characters in the novels, O guarani, by José de Alencar and Maíra, by Darcy Ribeiro. In order to achieve our goal, we will apply a literary approach, historical and ideological, once the indigenous has been characterized in a controversy in the Brazilian fiction: sometimes the Indian is shown to us as a hero (good savage), sometimes as an anti-hero (anthropophogus, with no character or identity).

Key words: hero, anti-hero, fiction
