Abstract

I intend to demonstrate, in this paper, how the Darcy’s Ribeiro crossbred fable, Utopia selvagem, is characterized by its hybridism, representing the very “hybrid state” of the Brazilian nation, as well as of any nation. So, we can realize the breaking of the borders between opposite pairs as settler and settled, primitive and civilized, mythic and technological. In this book, Darcy Ribeiro shows the essential indetermination of the Brazilian, as well as the foreigner’s, presenting cultural hybrid people, as we can see in the characters Próspero and Calibã. Ribeiro’s unifying vision aims to break the idea of national identity, surpassing the dialetic vision of a binary logic that characterizes Estruturalism.

Keywords: hybridism, cross-breeding, identity
