Media Literacy Project
How Students Interact with TikTok Videos in the Classroom
Abstract
Digital technologies and social media have revolutionized the way we access and consume information. At the same time, this information seems to have lost its reliability, as the internet opens up space for a wide range of voices, without necessarily verifying their veracity. Thus, the literature emphasizes the inclusion of Media Literacy for regular high school students as a necessary tool for their own subjective development. In this regard, we present a report on a classroom intervention using the TikTok platform. To this end, we selected several videos from the platform and showed them to students to analyze how they interacted, analyzed, and responded to questions about the content. We also propose an analysis of videos chosen by the students themselves, with some answers about the content, with the aim of simulating sharing. Based on this, we studied how young people classify and react to short-form audiovisual materials found on social media. Finally, we seek to promote more similar pedagogical proposals for Basic Education, in an attempt to insert Media Literacy as a reality for individuals.
